Mercury-based reference electrodes exhibit excellent stability over a wide range of experimental conditions. This stability ensures the reproducibility of measurements over time, making them reliable reference points in electrochemical experiments. Mercury-based electrodes have a wide potential range, allowing for measurements across a broad spectrum of electrochemical processes. This flexibility makes them suitable for various applications, including highly alkaline environments. The Hg/HgO Reference Electrode is designed specifically for alkaline solutions. Mercury-based reference electrodes are also less susceptible to interference from oxygen compared to some other reference electrodes. This characteristic is particularly beneficial when working in oxygen-sensitive electrochemical systems.
Application note The reference electrode should be stored with the rubber plug applied on the tip. Please see the complete instructions here. Keeping in the electrolyte may shorten its lifetime; the electrode operates well as long as there is at least ¼ of the solution in the electrode tube. Before use, rinse it with deionised water. If air bubbles are present around the porous frit, flick the tip several times to remove them. For cleaning, use detergent, alcohols or acetone and rinse it with deionised water. This reference electrode cannot be re-filled. Despite mercury-based reference electrode advantages, it's essential to note that the use of mercury-based reference electrodes has raised environmental concerns due to the toxicity of mercury. Please use it responsibly to prevent environmental contamination and harm to human health. When it is no longer suitable for use, dispose according to local regulations. Always prioritize safety and seek guidance from appropriate authorities to ensure the responsible and environmentally friendly disposal of mercury-containing items.
