Description

An Anion Exchange Membrane (AEM) is a type of polymer membrane that selectively allows the passage of negatively charged ions (anions) while blocking the passage of positively charged ions (cations). These membranes are commonly used in electrochemical devices such as fuel cells, electrolyzers, and various water treatment applications. AEMs are made from polymers containing positively charged functional groups (e.g., quaternary ammonium groups) that attract and transport anions while repelling cations. Some may be perfluorinated, while others might utilize different polymer chemistries or modifications for specific purposes. The structure and chemical properties of the AEMs are tailored to optimize performance for specific applications, such as improving ion conductivity, chemical stability, and mechanical strength.
