Nanoporous Fluoropolymer Membranes are often preferred for electrochemical applications over PFAS-free membranes mainly due to their superior chemical resistance. Fluoropolymers, such as polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) or Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) exhibit exceptional chemical resistance. They can withstand harsh chemical environments, including strong acids and bases, which are often present in electrochemical processes. PFAS-free membranes may not offer the same level of chemical resistance, making them less suitable for certain applications. Moreover, fluoropolymers have excellent temperature stability, maintaining their mechanical properties and structural integrity over a wide range of temperatures. This attribute is crucial for electrochemical applications where temperature fluctuations can occur during operation. Finally, Nanoporous Fluoropolymer Membranes typically have low ionic resistance, allowing ions to pass through with minimal impedance. This property is essential for efficient ion transport in electrochemical cells, enabling higher performance and faster reaction rates compared to PFAS-free membranes, which may exhibit higher ionic resistance.

They are resistant to degradation from UV radiation, moisture, and mechanical stress, ensuring the stability and reliability of the electrochemical system over time. These membranes are typically used to separate compartments in H-cells filled with aqueous or organic electrolytes and are ideal for organic electrosynthesis, electrolysis, fuel cells, batteries, biomolecule separation, membrane catalysis, etc. They are cut to the desired size using a laser and are also available in sheets.
