Description

This pressurized electrochemical cell is designed for controlled laboratory experiments under elevated pressure conditions. With a total internal volume of 50 mL and a maximum operating pressure of 10 bar, it provides a robust and versatile platform for electrochemical studies.

The cell features a chemically resistant PEEK chamber and lid, sealed with an O-ring and secured with two metal clamps, ensuring reliable, leak-tight operation. It is equipped with inlet and outlet ports for fluid or gas handling, as well as a dedicated port for a temperature probe. When a probe is not used, the port can be securely sealed with a plug.

The cell supports both 2-electrode and 3-electrode configurations, offering flexibility for a wide range of electrochemical measurements. While the example configuration shown in pictures accommodates a plate-type working electrode using a sample holder, the design is also compatible with disk electrodes.

All connections are based on Swagelok PFA fittings, some of which are modified with precision-drilled through-holes to allow for the integration of electrodes and a temperature probe. Please note electrodes are not included and must be selected separately (see compatible options below). This cell is not intended for hydrothermal reactions. Pressure should be supplied externally using a compressed gas system. Customization options, including alternative materials and design modifications, are available upon request.

Application note

This pressurized electrochemical cell is designed for a wide range of laboratory-scale experiments where controlled pressure conditions are required. Typical applications include:

  • Gas-involving electrochemical reactions: studies with gases such as CO2, H2, O2, or N2 under controlled pressure conditions
  • Electrocatalysis research: evaluation of catalyst performance, activity, and stability in 2- and 3-electrode configurations
  • CO2 reduction (CO2RR) and hydrogen evolution (HER): experiments requiring enhanced gas solubility and controlled mass transport
  • Electrochemical sensing and method development: development and validation of electroanalytical techniques under pressurized environments
  • Battery and redox chemistry studies: investigation of liquid-phase electrochemical systems and redox-active materials
  • Fundamental electrochemistry under pressure: research on pressure effects on reaction kinetics, transport phenomena, and electrode processes
  • Material screening and compatibility testing: evaluation of electrode materials, membranes, and electrolytes in controlled environments

Safety note

The use of a High-Pressure Electrochemical Cell involves working with equipment capable of withstanding elevated pressures and conducting experiments with potentially reactive chemicals. Ensuring safety during operation is paramount to prevent accidents and protect personnel and equipment.

  • Prior to operation, all personnel involved should receive comprehensive training on the setup, operation, and safety protocols
  • Adhere strictly to the specified pressure limitations. Do not exceed the recommended pressure range
  • Ensure that all materials, including electrodes, seals, and electrolytes, are compatible with the pressure and chemical environment inside the cell
  • Verify that the pressure relief mechanism is in place and functioning correctly
  • Regularly inspect the seals and connections for signs of wear, damage, or leaks
  • Establish clear emergency procedures, including evacuation routes and protocols for handling pressure-related incidents
  • Wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including safety glasses, gloves, and lab coats
  • Supervise experiments closely and monitor the cell continuously during operation
